Former WMAL radio host Amber Athey was fired after leftists claimed racism over her Twitter joke about Kamala Harris’ brown suit during the State of the Union.
The Spectator’s Washington editor and former Daily Caller reporter claimed she was terminated over a tweet making fun of Harris’ brown pantsuit which read, “Kamala looks like a UPS employee — what can brown do for you? Nothing good, apparently.”
Athey also wrote about her experiences in a recent article for The Spectator, saying that the tweet was picked up on by some detractors a few days after it was posted.
“I spoke critically of protests in favor of ‘trans kids’ at the University of North Texas,” she wrote. “A group of maniacal left-wing activists who want to chemically castrate children in the name of ‘gender affirmation’ came after me.”
“All of a sudden, the Kamala tweet was being re-framed as racist and dozens of Twitter accounts were bragging about contacting my employers about my “bigotry,”‘ Athey explained in a column for the publication.
She claims that her bosses at the radio station and The Spectator both received emails demanding she be fired, with the magazine ignoring them and the radio station being more concerned.
“I received a call out of the blue from Jeff Boden, the vice president of Cumulus Washington, D.C, and Kriston Fancellas, the vice president of Human Resources,” she wrote.
“They told me that the tweet I sent about Kamala was ‘racist’ and that subsequent follow-ups defending myself and making fun of the efforts to cancel me were unacceptable. I had violated the company’s social media policy, they said, and I was terminated effective immediately,” Athey added.
She went on to say she felt she was the latest victim of a “dishonest smear campaign”.
“I wish that there was more to this story because this is so infuriating, but I have a termination letter that lays out in very specific detail that it was, in fact, this tweet about Kamala Harris’ outfit, and I think what happened here is that Cumulus thought … that they could just make this all go away, they could get these few activists emails, they could appease the mob if they just fired me,” the former co-host of “O’Connor & Company,” said.
“Well, the first mistake is that the woke mob is never satisfied. They always want more scalps,” she told Carlson. “And the second mistake that they made is they thought that I was just going to roll over and shut up about this.”
Athey believes her radio station bosses mishandled the situation and did not show her the respect she deserved.
“They did not have the courtesy to offer me an opportunity to defend myself, nor did they speak to anyone at the program before handing down their decision.”
Athey believes this is just the latest attack against her from left-wing wingnuts.
“Throughout my six years as a political journalist and commentator, left-wing activists have tried every trick in the book to drive me out of the industry: digging up old tweets, demeaning my appearance, and harassing my employers. None of it has worked… until now,” she stated. “I am sick and tired of conservatives apologizing to the left, staying quiet because they’re afraid of burning bridges or complaining incessantly without taking action. We will only defeat the left’s bad faith attempts at censorship if we fight back.”
She said she received support from her colleagues at the station, with some commenting on her firing on the air, and the real problem for conservatives in the media is the corporate executives.
“My friends at WMAL have been actually incredibly supportive,” she said. “My former co-host Larry O’Connor was just on the program before this, and he’s been speaking out on my behalf. It’s actually been incredible to see.”
“I think pretty much every host, at this point, has commented on the situation on their shows on the radio station. The real problem here is the corporate executives, and this is a problem across conservative media.”
