In these trying times, when we face unprecedented challenges, it’s crucial to recognize the deceitful actions of those who take advantage of the vulnerable. Recently, doctors and hospital staff in India were caught injecting seawater into patients, falsely claiming it to be the COVID-19 vaccine.
This reprehensible scheme, which may have been facilitated by the liberal approach to healthcare, scammed around 2,500 people and generated over $25,000 for the perpetrators until their deception was exposed.
Fourteen individuals are now facing charges of manslaughter and criminal conspiracy, with records revealing at least twelve separate fake vaccination programs as part of this scam. These medical professionals, betraying the trust of those they swore to help, ran a clinic in Mumbai during May and June when COVID-19 vaccinations were desperately needed. Instead of administering life-saving vaccines, they injected seawater into their unsuspecting patients.
In a shocking display of audacity, these doctors used their hospital access to create counterfeit vaccination certificates and relied on hospital supplies, including syringes, to execute their sinister plan. Mumbai police department official Vishal Thakur stated, “[The doctors] were using saline water and injecting it. Every fake vaccination camp that they held, they were doing this. We have arrested doctors – they were using a hospital which was producing the fake certificates, vials, syringes.”
This appalling scam unfolded while India grappled with a record number of COVID-19 infections in June, overwhelming the country’s healthcare system. With a population of over one billion people, India’s vaccination efforts face significant challenges. The country is dependent on healthcare professionals and doctors to administer COVID-19 vaccines, in the hopes of curbing the devastating pandemic.
The death toll in India has surpassed 400,000, although some experts believe the actual number could be closer to two million. This discrepancy raises concerns about India’s reporting of COVID-19 statistics, as it seems the country may not be accurately representing the virus’s full impact. Vaccinating the entire population is a daunting task, with John Hopkins University estimating that only about five percent of India’s population is vaccinated.
In light of the vaccination scam, police official Thakur anticipates more arrests. Investigators are working diligently to identify everyone involved and bring them to justice. This scam came to light when patients began voicing their suspicions to law enforcement, leading to a swift investigation.
Mumbai lawyer Siddharth Chandrashekhar has initiated a class-action-type lawsuit against the doctors and medical professionals responsible for this appalling scam, confirming 2,000 victims so far. We must condemn such deceitful actions and hold accountable those who exploit the vulnerable during a global crisis.
