Authorities in the US have stumbled upon an underground smuggling tunnel on the US-Mexican border that runs the length of six football fields.

Last week, authorities in the United States discovered a massive tunnel complete with reinforced walls, electricity, ventilation, and a rail system, and they are now required by law to fill it in with cement.

According to a federal criminal complaint filed in US District Court in San Diego, officers began conducting traffic stops in the Otay Mesa industrial area after staking out a house they suspected of being used for drug storage.

Further investigation revealed a hole carved into the floor that linked to the tunnel that ended in Tijuana, Mexico.

“It’s estimated to be about 1,744 feet long, 61 feet deep, with a diameter of about 4 feet at its widest point,” said U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of California Randy Grossman according to local outlets.

In a report by BBC:

Officials confiscated 1,762lb (799kg) of cocaine, 165lb (75kg) of meth, and 3.5lb (1.6kg) of heroin from the property and related vehicles while six people aged between 31 and 55 were arrested on federal drug conspiracy charges. If found guilty, they could face life in prison and a $1m fine.

Grossman said:

“We allege that the defendants were driving into the garage and loading or dropping off cardboard boxes full of drugs to further the movement or distribution of drugs throughout the united states.”

Hee added, “there is no more light at the end of this narco-tunnel. We will take down every subterranean smuggling route we find to keep illicit drugs from reaching our streets and destroying our families and communities.”
