In a shocking and disgraceful act, two Texas teenage girls were arrested for stealing jewelry from a corpse and then flaunting their immoral behavior on Snapchat. The girls, aged 16 and 17, were charged with stealing items from a deceased individual who was found in a drainage ditch in Bexar County, Texas. As they recorded their heinous act on Snapchat, one of the girls even commented on her fashion style, showing a complete lack of empathy and respect for the dead.

The culprits have been identified as 17-year-old Bethany Martin and her unnamed 16-year-old friend. Their victim was a 25-year-old man whose lifeless body they discovered in the ditch on Monday morning. When the younger girl expressed her admiration for a pendant around the dead man’s neck, Martin callously decided to steal it.

Martin proceeded to remove the jewelry from the lifeless man’s throat, dismantle the pendant, and gift the medallion to her friend. She then discarded the unwanted chain in the grass. It wasn’t until another friend arrived on the scene that someone finally called 911 to report the presence of a dead man in a Texas drainage ditch.

Upon the arrival of the police, the girls recounted their discovery of the deceased individual while on their way to a nearby gas station. Unfathomably, instead of immediately alerting the authorities, they first used the corpse as a prop to gain attention on Snapchat. They recorded themselves hanging around the body, and Martin stealing the pendant from the lifeless man’s neck.

The 16-year-old accomplice, whose name has been withheld due to her age, admitted to the police that she desired the necklace and promptly added it to her own chain. Her reasoning? The stolen jewelry “matched her fashion style.” However, her ill-gotten accessory was short-lived as the police demanded the pendant be handed over, and it was subsequently returned to the deceased man’s next of kin.

The day following the incident, Martin was arrested and charged with theft of a human corpse or gave. Bexar County officials confirmed her arrest, but she was released shortly after posting a $2,000 bond, pending trial. The 16-year-old suspect also faces charges of the theft of a human corpse.

Texas homicide detectives have ruled out foul play in the death of the 25-year-old man, suspecting suicide as the cause. The appalling behavior of these two teenagers serves as a stark reminder of the erosion of basic human decency in our society. It is crucial that we emphasize the importance of empathy, respect, and the value of life, both living and deceased, to our younger generations.

These girls selfishly exploited a tragic situation for social media attention, displaying a callous disregard for the dignity of the deceased. We must work together as a community to restore the values that seem to have been lost and ensure that such a disgraceful act is not repeated.
