A horrific incident was all captured on camera when a rifle exploded into a Kentucky man, who suffered terrible injuries.
Scott Allen DeShields Jr. is lucky to be alive after his .50 caliber rifle blew up in his face, in what he calls a “complete freak accident.”
As DeShields was filming a video of himself using his “Serbu RN 50 with 50 BMG SLAP ammunition.” when things just went horribly wrong. DeShields, who operates Kentucky Ballistics as a men’s lifestyle site focusing on fast cars, and big guns wrote in an Instagram, “To my understanding, these were genuine military rounds, but apparently, they had been tampered with.”
DeShields created a film detailing the events in order to share his ordeal with others. A clip from the incident in question was included in the video, which rapidly went viral and received millions of views. The former Kentucky State Trooper explained why he thought his weapon went off in his face in a post on Kentucky Ballistics’ Instagram account.
“A 1-inch piece of metal blew through my neck lacerating my jugular vein and puncturing a hole in my right lung. My right lung would later fill with blood and collapse. My right orbital bone broke in three places and my nose broke. I went blind in my right eye instantly,” DeShields wrote.
While being transported to the hospital, DeShields had his left thumb “shoved into the hole in [his] neck” to stop the flow of blood. He also sustained rib fractures in addition to having his “left index finger snapped.”
He wrote the following on Instagram about his injuries:
A 1 inch piece of metal blew through my neck lacerating my jugular vein and puncturing a hole in my right lung. My right lung would later fill with blood and collapse. My right orbital bone broke in three places and my nose broke. I went blind in my right eye instantly (My eyesight returned a day later). My left index finger snapped and I had fractured ribs. After having my right lung intubated and drained while I was awake, I was then sedated and life flighted to Vanderbilt hospital in Nashville.
“The doctors said I lost a tremendous amount of blood. They said that I would typically have 6 to 8 units in my body max and they gave me 5 units total. They said my thumb in my neck saved me. I would have died otherwise. They also told me that the majority of people would have died from these injuries.” DeShields writes that in order to emphasize how fortunate he was to survive the experience.
DeShields also said that the next day after the explosion, his vision improved. Since then, he has praised God for his kindness and for saving his life. “Praise God the surgery was a success! God is good! “DeShields exclaimed, adding, “I’m healing extremely fast. I came home in just 8 days! ”
