The best candidates for available positions are constantly being sought after by businesses. Sadly, much too frequently, those employed turn out to be very different from what they appeared to be on their resumes. Because of this, a company in Texas recently made the decision to search in a different way for the ideal applicants to fill their employment opportunities. However, for wanting to be straightforward about not wanting to hire idiots, one Texas business owner is getting a reaction who said the quiet part out loud when looking for employees.

According to KHOU, Walter Parsons, owner of Pets Gone Wild Resort, in Pasadena, Texas, posted the sign that reads, “Now hiring non-stupid people,” after growing frustrated at some of the workers whom he had previously employed and did not work out. However, Parsons’ eye-catching sign did not take long for a critic to call, the Houston Chronicle reported. Some residents were offended by Parson after hanging up a large banner on his property.

Parsons said, “I said, ‘Ma’am, I’m sorry but (there are) a whole lot worse words out there that people are using that are offensive. I’m not going to take it down.” He added that some applicants haven’t been successful.

Parsons said to KHOU, We’re trying to weed out the people that do come in. We hired one last week that lasted three days.”

“Repeatedly, ‘get off your cell phone, you’ve got dogs to watch. OK, put the cell phone up, go back out there.’ Twenty minutes later, she’s back on her cell phone,” Parsons said, claiming that he has tried more conventional methods without much success and that many of his staff are unaware that he expects them to work during working hours.

“At least be as smart as I am,” he added.

“This was the very first one at the top of the page. We got a good laugh out of it. My wife says get it, and I said alright that’s fine,” Parsons said, saying that they found the sign on Amazon.

However, for a woman who identified only as Taylor N, the KHOU added that it was unacceptable for the woman. Taylor N said, “What does it say to prior employees? ‘Oh, we think you’re stupid so we’re trying to hire somebody that we think is smarter than you?”’

She added, “The fact that they felt so emboldened to put something up there like that, it’s disgusting, it’s distasteful and it’s unprofessional.”

But some clients who leave their pets at the establishment have a more positive attitude toward the sign.

Pet owner Candace Reyes, a customer since January 2021 said to the Houston Chronicle,

“I just saw the sign yesterday, and I laughed because we knew it was Walter’s sense of humor, and we took it in jest, I can see why some people might be offended, but you do hope they hire responsible people.”

The owner, however, claims the sign actually worked, Pason said, he has received three good applicants for his latest opening and will be taking down the sign, whether it was the buzz over the sign or just being visible, the KHOU report added.

“Come through here and take a tour and take a look at the responsibility that we have. Would you put your child somewhere that wasn’t dedicated, that didn’t have smart people in it?” Parsons said, claiming  that quality matters in his business.

“Since COVID the society has gotten just completely out of hand,” he said objections to the sign are a sign of the times. “They don’t want their feelings hurt.” he added, the Sun Herald reported.
