No one knew what to expect when this group of “silent monks” took the stage — and I bet you’ll never see the hilarious twist coming.
Well, how do you inject humor into a religious-themed performance? Creativity.
In 2008, a group of high school students recently used the idea to bring some laughs to their school’s Christmas performance. While we’re not sure how often this is actually a problem for religious men, the students made the choice to sing the “Hallelujah Chorus” during their school’s yearly Christmas production. But rather than doing things the old-fashioned way, these students made everyone laugh and grin without saying a single word or singing a single note.
Yes, that is true. They managed to create a performance of silent monks singing a well-known piece from Handel’s Messiah. The result was a hilarious skit and a viral video that is sweeping across the internet.
In true monk style, the group of students entered the stage wearing dark robes and hooded capes to conceal their heads. The crowd wasn’t really sure how they would approach the song as the music began, but they didn’t have to wait long to find out.
Now being silent monks, they had to figure out a way to sing without uttering a single word. That’s where the fake monks reached for the poster boards that bore the lyrics to the well-known hymn “The Hallelujah Chorus” as soon as the music started. Instead of singing along with the music, they struggled to drop and pick up the printed lyrics as they were being sung by the recording.
These young performers certainly worked hard to perfect their acts! They all successfully utter the appropriate phrases at the appropriate times, and they even incorporate a small dance move into certain songs to match the beat.
This routine is so perfect and funny, and judging from the YouTube comments, it was even funnier in person! One person even says, “This is worthy of Monty Python! Whoever came up with it is a genius!”
Well, it’s great to see kids put their creative minds to such awesome use.
