Do you ever feel as though everything is turned inside out? If so, I have a story for you: A man just shot a police officer seven times, leaving him nearly dead and severely disabled, after initiating a deadly shooting right next to his children. However, instead of taking responsibility, the shooter’s family decided to sue the wounded officer for $700,000.
The officers never thought it would come to a decision between life and death.
Officer Carlson responded to a call about a man who was allowing children as young as three years to drive a car, on the early afternoon of Sunday.
Casper Police pulled over the 38-year-old David Wolosin, but as a sovereign citizen, Wolosin believed that he didn’t have to follow U.S. law or comply with the police, rather than obeying the law or minding the safety of those young children and others, Wolosin brandished a gun and opened fire at the police officers all within a few feet of his own children after stepping outside of his car.
Officer Randi Garret and Officer Jacob Carlson had no choice but to retaliate in order to protect themselves. Unbelievably, Wolosin attempted to shoot the policemen by firing at the car in which his children were seated, forcing the police to take immediate action to stop the threat to their safety and the safety of the kids.
Wolosin shot at Carlson multiple times. Garrett returned fire, shooting and killing Wolosin. With Wolosin dead, his children were out of harm’s way. Although Officer Garret was unharmed, Officer Carlson was left with “life-threatening injuries,” the police officer suffered a shattered pelvis, a severed artery in his pelvic area, infections, and nerve damage from the bullets inflicted by Wolosin.
According to Blue Lives Matter, Carlson yelled at medics to amputate his legs to relieve the excruciating anguish. His recovery was a medical miracle because, during one of the emergency surgeries, his heart even stopped five times.
His injuries were severe enough to force the young officer to retire from the police department.
Although Carlson has suffered more than enough, the late gunman’s family has decided to make things far worse.
Wolosin’s family has filed a lawsuit against the officers involved, the police department, and the City, the family is demanding $700,000 for the emotional distress the children suffered when they watched as their “loving uncle” was killed.
“Defendants Officer (Jacob) Carlson and Officer (Randi) Garrett’s unlawful and unwarranted acts, lack of training, and deviation from official customs or policies of law enforcement agencies at large, unlawfully caused David Wolosin’s injuries and death,” a Wyoming attorney wrote.
Under the second amendment, Lawyers representing Wolosin’s side testified in the federal complaint that David Wolosin was within his constitutional right to carry a gun.
They argued that officers went against his constitutional rights to due process and to be free from unjustified searches and seizures.
And to make up for the suspected damage the police officers caused, Lawyers, believe money should be given as compensation.
The district attorney has previously concluded that Carlson and Garret were justified in their actions and that they adhered to departmental rules when they opened fire on Wolosin. However, the family still intends to drag the police through a pricey and mentally draining judicial process.
“Officers Carlson and Garrett reacted in a commendable and appropriate way to protect themselves from a deadly and unprovoked assault upon them,” then-District Attorney Michael Blonigen wrote to the investigating agent at the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation.
John Henley, the city attorney of Casper, acknowledged his dismay and disappointment at the situation in his native Wyoming as well as many people who are also furious that a lawsuit would be filed on behalf of a suspect who injured a police officer.
