Opinion| If you missed this year’s Super Bowl, you didn’t miss much of a game, but the event’s opening performances were definitely worth watching.
Soul singer Gladys Knight crushed the National Anthem. She was nothing short of angelic.
Take a look:
When it was first announced that she would be performing at the Super Bowl, Knight said in a statement, “I understand that Mr. Kaepernick is protesting two things, and they are police violence and injustice. I am here today and on Sunday, Feb. 3 to give the Anthem back its voice, to stand for that historic choice of words, the way it unites us when we hear it and to free it from the same prejudices and struggles I have fought long and hard for all my life, from walking back hallways, from marching with our social leaders, from using my voice for good — I have been in the forefront of this battle longer than most of those voicing their opinions to win the right to sing our country’s anthem on a stage as large as the Super Bowl LIII.”
It wasn’t a surprise that liberals got angry at anyone who decided to perform.
Knight was interviewed by CNN’s Don Lemon following her performance.
Chicks on Right explain that Lemon “played the words of Mark Geragos at her. Geragos, Colin Kaepernick’s lawyer, said that people who performed during the Super Bowl were crossing an ‘intellectual picket line.’”
The CNN host questioned Knight as to what she made of the comment, even going so far as to question if she was worried about her career after agreeing to perform at the Super Bowl.
She wasn’t about to take the bait.
Knight explained that she grew up singing, explaining that she grew up in a time when prayer was still allowed in schools. She stated that people need to understand what it’s all about, noting that she, herself, has military family members, so the National Anthem is a special song to her.
People weren’t happy with Lemon for questioning Knight:
Gladys Knight totally schooled Don Lemon, and it’s great to see so many people who have her back.
