It’s always a treat to visit our nation’s capital, and walk along Pennsylvania Avenue and gaze out at the Washington Monument located on the National Mall, or perhaps stroll to the Lincoln Memorial, honoring our 16thPresident of the United States.
And perhaps it’s that spirit of inclusion that Melania Trump is bringing to the White House and embracing her new role as First Lady, and making another part of the “people’s house” available to the public.
Moreover, Melania better than most first ladies understands about living within a repressive régime, where access to the government is limited, and where basic freedoms are denied. Those experiences of growing up in a small village in Sevnica, at the time a part of Yugoslavia more than likely inspired the First Lady to open another part of the White House to the general public, the presidential movie theater to visitors entering the East Wing of the White House.
“The White House belongs to the people of this country,” the First Lady said in a statement. “I believe everyone who takes the time to visit and tour the White House should have as much access to its rich history and wonderful traditions as possible. It is my hope that our visitors truly enjoy the newest piece of the tour.”
Most tourists visiting the White House for the first time perhaps aren’t aware of the rich history associated with the White House, and the First Lady is adding a little historical context by posting a photograph of the theater, and a brief history of how the presidential theater came to be, from a cloak room in 1942.
The theater has been used by almost all presidents to relax and unwind with family and friends, however on occasion the theater as been also used to rehearse major speeches like the State of the Union address. The president can view a movie anytime day or night.
The self-guided tours are available from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays (excluding federal holidays or unless otherwise noted).
