Supreme Court rules in favor of High School Football Team’s religious freedom…

On Monday, the Supreme Court issued a 6-3 decision in favor of a high school football coach from Washington who was fired for silently praying on the field after games.

Since 2015, Coach Joe Kennedy has been at odds with the Bremerton School District. His prayers, according to the district, violated the Establishment Clause of the US Constitution. However, the Supreme Court has since decided that Coach Kennedy’s First Amendment rights were in fact violated by Bremerton School District.

“SCOTUS sides with a high school football coach in a First Amendment case about prayer at the 50-yard-line. In a 6-3 ruling, SCOTUS says the public school district violated the coach’s free speech and free exercise rights when it barred him from praying on the field after games,” SCOTUS Blog tweeted

Even though they work at a state-funded school, instructors and students alike still have the right to free speech, the court noted.

“When it comes to Mr. Kennedy’s free speech claim, our precedents remind us that the First Amendment’s protections extend to ‘teachers and students,’ neither of whom ‘shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate,'” the majority opinion stated.

Justice Neil Gorsuch wrote for the majority stating “The Constitution and the best of our traditions counsel mutual respect and tolerance, not censorship and suppression, for religious and nonreligious views alike.”

Kennedy and his attorneys at the Christian legal group First Liberty Institute applauded the ruling. He appeared on Fox’s “America Reports” to share his reaction to the Monday ruling.

“I just can’t stop smiling and, you know, thank God and everyone that supported me. I found out that I am not insane its absolutely true of all of the facts in the case. It just feels good to know that the first amendment is alive and well,” Kennedy said.
