Heading into Election Day, liberals seemed to think they had it all wrapped up. Kamala Harris, they were sure, had this election in the bag. According to them, the idea of Donald Trump making a comeback was pure fantasy. But Election Day came, and the results weren’t just a win for Trump—they were a landslide.
Not only did he dominate in the Electoral College, but he also took the popular vote with a clear margin. This left Democrats and progressives all across the country in a state of disbelief. For a party that once billed itself as the “party of joy” and unity, the response has been anything but joyful. Instead, we’ve seen a new brand of “tolerance” emerge, and let’s just say, it’s not quite what their campaign signs promised.
In fact, some have taken it to the next level. At the University of Oregon, Assistant Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life Leonard Serrato threw out the playbook on peace and unity entirely. In an Instagram post dripping with venom, Serrato had a message for anyone who dared vote for Trump: “go f— yourself.” It’s always heartwarming to see such tolerance on display from an educator, isn’t it? And Serrato didn’t stop there. For those struggling with inflation or high grocery prices, his advice was simple—get a better “f—ing job” and “do better in life.”
Never mind that inflation and prices are a little bigger than any individual job hunt. To cap off his tirade, he suggested that Trump voters should take a flying leap off a bridge, complete with a sarcastic peace sign. Ah, there’s the love and kindness we were promised!
It didn’t take long for Serrato’s video to blow up, and the backlash was immediate. After public outrage, the University of Oregon scrambled to put Serrato on administrative leave and distance itself from his remarks. A spokesperson for the university stated that Serrato’s words were “abhorrent and not in alignment with our values.” But this official response took a few twists and turns. At first, another university spokesperson remarked that since Serrato had made these comments “on his own time,” the school had no obligation to intervene. But apparently, someone higher up decided that this one was too hot to ignore, and soon the university announced an investigation into Serrato’s conduct. I
t’s funny how principles and policies can shift so quickly when public image is on the line.
Meanwhile, Serrato has retreated into the shadows, making his Instagram private. But the damage has been done, and Trump voters are left unsurprised. They’re no strangers to this double standard. Democrats preach love and inclusivity—until they run into someone with a different viewpoint. Then, all bets are off, and they’ll pull out the nastiest insults in the book, all while keeping their halo firmly in place. Imagine for a second if a college official had posted a similar message toward Harris voters. We’d see firings and public statements faster than you can say “double standard.”
In a time when universities claim to celebrate diversity, it’s a wonder that only some perspectives are allowed a seat at the table. Serrato’s rage-fueled rant is just the latest example of this selective tolerance. If the University of Oregon is serious about being a space for diverse opinions and respectful discourse, then it should hold Serrato accountable. After all, free speech isn’t a one-way street, and respect for others’ views shouldn’t be, either.
So here we are. Trump has won—fair and square—and the so-called party of joy is in shambles, unable to come to grips with reality. As the left continues to unravel, one thing is clear: their calls for unity and love only go as far as their own worldview. For the rest of us, we’ll be over here, watching the fireworks and hoping that, eventually, reason will make a comeback too.
