Heinz, the ketchup behemoth, has recently been scrambling to do damage control after a video allegedly filmed in one of their factories went viral. Outraged consumers were shocked to see factory workers putting rotten and discolored tomatoes into a machine that would eventually produce countless bottles of ketchup to be distributed across several countries.
Over the years, Heinz has managed to evade any significant scandals, but this repulsive video footage surfaced and forced Heinz Egypt into a defensive position. The footage was aired on a state-run current affairs program and allegedly showed two workers tossing rotten and discolored tomatoes into a metal tank used for making ketchup.
The video circulating online appears to have been taken at a facility outside Cairo and shows a man standing on open boxes of tomatoes, hurling them into a large vat. At least one individual recognized the wrongdoing and decided to film it. Heinz immediately responded, asserting that the allegations about the quality of their production line were “completely misleading and inaccurate.”
Heinz Egypt denied the rotten tomato allegations, stating, “The recent story concerning our tomato factory in Egypt was completely misleading and inaccurate. The edited footage shows an unreal picture and neglects the processing stages, hence gives the wrong impression. It is important for everyone to know that we use only healthy tomatoes, all of which are processed using industry-best standards.”
Another statement claimed, “The video was deliberately edited to not show all the real stages of the tomato purification and sorting process in an attempt to falsify the facts, which represents intentional and deliberate harm to the company’s reputation that is contrary to the facts.”
However, angry customers felt the statement didn’t go far enough to dispel their concerns over quality. They demanded that Heinz release footage showing the entire process to prove the video’s inaccuracies, but no such footage was ever released.
A local media outlet reported that the TV investigation resulted in a police raid at a Heinz-affiliated factory in Egypt and the seizure of two tons of tomato sauce made from rotten produce. The company tried to assuage concerns by claiming the products were not intended for distribution. However, the police intervention allegedly led to the arrest of one of the company’s managing directors.
Heinz stated that it adheres to “strict quality standards” across all of its products and that all of its products undergo strict control measures. “We are committed to strictly applying these standards across all our factories worldwide, including Egypt,” the company said. Unfortunately for Heinz, not everyone is convinced by their explanations.
Ketchup, being primarily tomato-based, seems like a food that wouldn’t have a disgusting manufacturing process. However, it’s not until you witness ketchup’s behind-the-scenes preparation that you can truly make the judgment call yourself.
