A centenarian couple reveals the astonishing secret to their 79-year marriage, defying the odds and leaving many in awe.
A loving couple, both on the cusp of their 100th birthdays, have revealed the secret to their incredible 79-year marriage, which might seem unimaginable to most. Hubert and June Malicote, born in rural Kentucky in July 1922, crossed paths in Hamilton, Ohio, at a church event when they were 19. That chance encounter, marked by June’s captivating smile, blossomed into a romance and led to their wedding on June 8, 1943.
“We went in and they were all standing, and right in front of us was a pew full of young girls,” Hubert said, describing their chance meeting, WSVN reported. “And, she looked around at me and smiled.”
Shortly after, Hubert was deployed to Hawaii to serve in World War II. During his time away, Hubert sent June a grass skirt as a token of love, transforming her into his “Honolulu girl.” The couple was finally reunited after two long years, and their bond remained strong as ever.
They settled down in Hamilton, where they started a family, eventually boasting three children, seven grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.
The centenarian couple attributes their enduring love to their faith and a unique principle: they have never had a fight in their entire marriage. Their daughter, Jo, confirmed this astonishing fact. However, the couple admitted they have had their share of disagreements, but they have always managed to work through their differences without hurting each other.
Hubert advised, “If there’s controversy, you might have to walk away for a couple of minutes. Then you come back in and change the subject or you work it out.”
Hubert and June’s relationship is also built on a strong foundation of friendship. Each night, they enjoy dinner together, watch classic westerns, and share a goodnight kiss before sleep. Their daughter Jo spoke of their heartwarming daily ritual, saying, “They greet each other with huge smiles.” The couple relishes spending time together, whether it be exchanging stories about their day or simply living in the moment.
As they celebrate their love story, which has lasted longer than many people’s entire lives, Hubert and June can’t imagine a life without their better half. Their simple yet profound advice offers a recipe for a successful marriage: find your best friend, marry them, and don’t let disagreements tear you apart. It is a reminder to cherish the time spent together, even if it spans an incredible 79 years.
