In an age where “wokeness” infiltrates the military, the Navy’s desperate recruitment strategy has left many questioning its impact on our nation’s fighting force.

Amid a significant drop in recruitment, the Navy has reportedly sought the assistance of an active duty sailor and drag queen to join its “digital ambassador” program, aiming to broaden its reach to potential recruits via social media platforms like Instagram.

This desperate move signals the Navy’s attempt to cater to the younger Generation Z, enlisting an active-duty drag queen for a trial initiative that leverages popular social media platforms to reach a wider audience in light of the military’s recruitment challenges.

Yeoman 2nd Class Joshua Kelley, who uses the stage name Harpy Daniels, disclosed that the Navy invited him to be their inaugural “Navy Digital Ambassador.”

As Daniels shared in an Instagram post from 2022, “I am Joshua Kelley, currently 2nd class petty officer in the US Navy. I identify as Non-Binary, and this has been an unbelievable experience since I’ve joined the Navy… This experience has brought me so much strength, courage, and ambition to continue being an advocate and representation of queer sailors!”

Daniels explained in an interview with the USS Museum Constitution that his shipboard drag performances began as a morale-boosting MWR (Morale, Welfare and Recreation) event.

Kelley sees his drag performances as a tribute to many service members who experienced harassment, bullying, or worse for being openly gay during the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell era. He plans to continue working hard as a sailor and making a difference in the LGBTQ+ community through his drag performances.

However, not everyone sees these efforts positively. Critics argue that showcasing a drag queen as a recruitment tool could lead to a military force that lacks the discipline, motivation, and intimidation necessary to confront a well-trained and highly motivated enemy. They assert that other nations, such as China, may use this strategy as a means to ridicule and undermine the U.S. military’s authority and strength.

It’s evident that the Navy’s recruitment methods are shifting in a more “woke” direction to appeal to younger generations, potentially at the expense of traditional military values and discipline.

The question remains whether this approach will be effective in attracting the right candidates and preserving the reputation of the U.S. military on the world stage.
