A Facebook video posted by Tom Oye shows him activating his inflatable backpack seconds before getting caught in an avalanche while snowboarding near Whistler, Canada.

The backpack was a birthday gift from his grandmother and other family members, ABC News Australia reported.

The video shows Oye falling down the mountain, but since he activated his backpack as the snow begin crackling, he was spared from being fully caught in the avalanche. The backpack acts in a similar way to a car’s airbag.
