Sidney Katherine Powell (born 1955) is an American attorney and former federal prosecutor is most known for promoting conspiracy theories in an attempt to sway the 2020 presidential election in the United States.
Powell began her legal career as an assistant US attorney in Texas’ Western District. During her tenure, she prosecuted Jimmy Chagra, a suspect in the assassination of US district judge John H. Wood Jr. in May 1979. She defended retired lieutenant general Michael Flynn in the United States v. Flynn case in 2019, and she represented executives in the Enron investigation. Powell joined then-President Donald Trump’s legal team in an attempt to overturn President Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 presidential election in 2020. Trump’s legal staff distanced themselves from Powell after several interviews in which she pushed election fraud suspicions, yet she continued to meet with the president in the White House. Powell continued to sue in district courts on his own, eventually losing four federal lawsuits in Michigan, Georgia, Arizona, and Wisconsin.
Powell has advocated individuals and slogans linked with the QAnon conspiracy theory, claiming that Flynn was framed by a secret “deep state” operation. She claimed that in the 2020 presidential election, a secret international cabal involving communists, “globalists,” George Soros, Hugo Chávez, the Clinton Foundation, the CIA, and thousands of Democratic and Republican officials—including Trump ally and Georgia governor Brian Kemp—used voting machines to sway millions of votes away from Trump.
Dominion Voting Systems and Smartmatic, both voting technology companies, sued her for defamation after she accused them of conspiring to rig the election. The mayor of Detroit and Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel filed separate papers in federal court seeking sanctions against her for attempting to overturn Biden’s victory in Michigan.
This Memorial Day Weekend in Dallas, Texas, attorney Sidney Powell spoke at the For God and Country Rally.
Sidney Powell was asked about what would happen if numerous states overturned their presidential election results in 2020 during her on-stage chat.
Sidney Powell: We’re definitely in uncharted territory. There are cases where elections have been overturned. But there’s never been one at the presidential level where everybody will jump to point out. That doesn’t mean it can’t be done, though. There’s always the first case. And as far as I know, this is the first case of abject fraud and obtaining a coup of the United States of America. So, it’s going to have to be dealt with. It should be that he can simply be reinstated, that a new inauguration day is set. (cheers) And Biden is told to move out of the White House. And President Trump should be moved back in.
