Store owners are now dealing with a government-sanctioned shoplifting problem, in addition to feces on the streets and the homelessness crisis in San Francisco.
According to cops, San Francisco has become a shoplifter’s paradise, with thieves like the one shown on video looting a Walgreens emboldened by the crime’s relaxed punishment as businesses shutter.
The theft at Walgreens, which occurred right in front of a security guard, renewed controversy about Proposition 47, a controversial city law that lowers the penalty for stealing less than $950 in goods from a felony to a misdemeanor.
Lt. Tracy McCray of the San Francisco Police Department told Fox News’ “America’s Newsroom” on Wednesday, “What happened in that Walgreens has been going on in that city for quite a while.”
McCray said, “If you steal below $950, you get a citation and you just get to walk away and if you don’t show up to court, guess what? Maybe you get a bench warrant or maybe they even toss that before it even gets to that point.”
He continued, “I’m used to it, I mean, we can have the greatest hits compilation of people just walking in and cleaning out the store shelves and security guards, the people who work there, just standing by helplessly because they can’t do anything.”

Based on the Independent, Walgreens claims that petty thievery in the city has gotten out of hand to the point where 17 of its stores have had to close. Because the criminals assault them so frequently, CVS has advised its employees not to intervene, calling San Francisco “one of the epicenters of organized retail crime.”
According to a New York Times report, Brendan Dugan, the head of CVS’ retail crime section, remarked at a 13 May hearing with municipal officials “We’ve had incidents where our security officers are assaulted on a pretty regular basis in San Francisco.”
Stealing has grown endemic, according to police.
Commander Raj Vaswani of the San Francisco Police Department stated at the hearing, “The one trend we are seeing is more violence and escalating – and much more bold.”
It is even more alarming is the fact that many shoplifters, sell their stolen products on the street, often within walking distance of the business where they were stolen.
Between November 2020 and February 2021, Walgreens at 30th St and Mission St reported 16 shoplifting offenses. A municipal official reported he spotted Walgreens products being sold in an outdoor market just six blocks away, near 24th St and Mission, for example.
A member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, Ahsha Safaí told The New York Times, “Half of Walgreens was on the sidewalk. I’m not kidding.”
Locals, however, are enraged – at the stores. When Walgreens stated it was closing after 18 shoplifting incidents in four months, a group of locals began a petition to keep it open.
