After the image gained a lot of attention, another Facebook page named “Fire Lindsey Stone” appeared and quickly racked up more than 5,500 likes, however, it has since been removed after completing its purpose. The picture, which was taken next to a sign at the military cemetery that urged “Silence and Respect,” served as a rallying point for criticism of the disrespect shown to those who had given their lives in service.

According to Inside Edition, Lindsey Stone said she now understands the picture “was in incredibly poor taste.”  In a statement, she stated:

“We sincerely apologize for all the pain we have caused by posting the picture…We never meant any disrespect to any of the people nationwide who have served this country and defended our freedom so valiantly.”

Stone’s father, Peter Stone, a 61-year-old retired ironworker, said:

“It was just a spur of the moment, total lapse of judgment. She wasn’t reacting to the place; she was reacting to the sign and she apologizes to everybody.”

Lindsey Stone flashed the obscene gesture at Arlington National Cemetery, next to a sign that asked for respect.

He requested an apology from his daughter after the incident, calling her actions “disgraceful” and blaming them for a “total lapse of judgment” in snapping the photo.

Lindsey Stone was finally able to secure a position working with autistic children after receiving rejections from prospective employers on a consistent basis for almost a year. However, over her past transgression, she lives in continual fear that her new employers will terminate her even now.

I love this job so much. I love these kids. One of the parents paid me a really high compliment the other day. I’ve only been working with her son for a month and she was like, ‘The moment I met you, seeing the way you are with my son, and the way you treat people, you were meant to work in this field.’ But, what if she found out? Would she feel the same way?”  she told the Guardian.

In addition, Lindsey Stone won’t date because she’s worried about what people will think of her, and her love life has also been affected.

Stone said, “Since it happened, I haven’t tried to date anybody. How much do you let a new person into your life? Do they already know?”
