Georgetown University Will Give Admissions To The Descendants Of Slaves Sold in 1838

Liberals. They embrace political correctness like it is their child; sensitive to harsh words; quick to blame themselves for others feelings of oppression; delusional. This perfectly sums up Georgetown president John DeGioia, who claims they will identify and reach out to descendants of slaves and recruit them to the university as some sort of bizarre attempt to atone for profiting from the sale of enslaved people. You can’t make this sh*t up.

VIA| Georgetown University will give preference in admissions to the descendants of slaves owned by the Maryland Jesuits.

On Thursday morning, a university committee released a report that also called on its leaders to offer a formal apology for the university’s participation in the slave trade.

In 1838, two priests who served as president of the university orchestrated the sale of 272 people to pay off debts at the school. The slaves were sent from Maryland to plantations in Louisiana.

From WSJ:

A man who claimed to represent 350 living relatives of the slaves rose from the audience at Georgetown after Mr. DeGioia spoke. He said there are now more than 10,000 descendants of the slaves who were sold.

Mr. DeGioia said the school is not setting up scholarships for the descendants but has need-blind admissions that would provide any necessary financial aid.

Beyond helping the descendants attend Georgetown, a university-commissioned report recommends increasing diversity at the school, where the undergraduate student body is now 59% white and 6% African-American, according to federal data. It will also rename two campus buildings, one after a slave named Isaac whose name is the first mentioned in the documents from the 1838 sale. The second will be named after Anne Marie Becraft, a free African-American woman who founded a school for black girls near Georgetown in 1827.

In addition, the school will also offer a public apology for the university’s past relationship with slavery, create a public memorial to the slaves and establish a new institute for the study of slavery.
