Kirsters Baish| It was reported by Robert Gehl that a Beef O’Brady’s in Beavercreek, Ohio decided that they were willing to risk their bottom line in order to stand up for what is right. While Beef O’Brady’s has always been considered a sports bar chain, one franchise owner named Bill DeFries decided that sports aren’t always what is most important in life. Sometimes we have to stand up for a cause we truly believe in, and sometimes that cause might cost us.
DeFries posted a sign in his restaurant that explained to his customers that he would not be showing any NFL games due to the disrespect that has been shown to the American flag and all that it stands for. DeFries met with his leadership team to speak with them about what it would mean from a business perspective to stop playing NFL games.
This sign was placed in the restaurant so everyone would know that they didn’t plan on playing any NFL games:
He explained, “It started a while ago, but it really was the effect of seeing what the players did [two Sundays ago]. I have to tell you as a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, I served to defend our country’s Constitution and free speech, and while I defend the right of every American to express their views and voice this freely, the actions demonstrated by the NFL players during the country’s national anthem — it was offensive and disrespectful to me as a proud veteran and all my fellow veterans.”
DeFries explained that he was well aware that it wouldn’t be good for his restaurant, but he had to follow through with his promise.
“We are a family restaurant, and we have been for 13 years. And our customers are from the community. They come in here to relax and enjoy a meal and be entertained, in particular by the NFL on Sundays. But we also serve a lot of local military families and veterans, many of whom share my view on the NFL players’ actions during the national anthem. Before making this decision, I met with the leadership team to ensure we were all aligned on the issue, and we were. We knew that our sales would be negatively impacted.”
DeFries stated, “Every day our sales have been up between 200 and 300 percent. People we have never seen before are driving hours to support us and the employees. We have received heart-warming and supportive phone calls, emails and direct messages from people all over the United States thanking us.”

“I feel good, but it’s not about me,” DeFries explained to the Dayton Daily News. “It has less to do with me now than it has to do with we. It turns out the enormous amount of pride and reverence that we have for the national anthem and everything that it means to us as a free people … is shared by the vast majority of Americans, and I’m seeing it firsthand.”
CBS News recently completed a poll in which people were asked, “Do you approve or disapprove of football players protesting by kneeling during the national anthem?” Fifty-two percent of people polled answered saying that they STRONGLY disapprove or somewhat disapprove. Thirty-eight percent of people polled said that they strongly or somewhat approve. Only nine percent said they weren’t sure one way or the other.

Americans are taking note of the bad behavior presented by these self-entitled NFL players. It’s time for more Americans to take a stand like DeFries and represent the country that has given us all so much.
