After he was assigned double weekend shifts for eight hours, a Starbucks employee broke down in a viral video. The barista sobbed as he recently took to Twitter to air his grievances about the horrors associated with an eight-hour workday, delivering a tearful description of how unjust it is that he was scheduled to work for a length of time that most would consider a typical workday.
Eva Sunshine, who goes by the name “Evan,” a trans barista uploaded his tearful diatribe to his personal Twitter account where he dove straight into how stressful a standard workday is to handle.
Adding that he was ready to walk out and quit after having a rough day, an obviously upset Evan began, “People wonder why we need a union at Starbucks.
“And I am literally about to quit. Like, I don’t know if I’m going to do it. But like I really want to, I almost walked out today. And I’m crying in the back room right now and I almost cried on the floor. It’s just…like I’m a full time student, I get scheduled for 25 hours a week. And then on weekends, they scheduled me the entire day, open to close, I’m on the schedule for eight-and-a-half hours, both Saturday and Sunday. I’m like, three-and-a-half hours into my shift.”
Evan visibly whimpered after emphasizing the presence of customers at a place that serves up sugar-laden coffees as he described how only four people were working at the Ithaca Starbucks branch while his video was being made.
“There’s so many customers and we have four people on the floor all day. Only five people were put on the schedule, and somebody had to call out. And there are four people running the whole store, and there’s so many customers and the boss only scheduled five people. We only have 13 people employed at this store. And there’s so many customers…We don’t have fair scheduling; managers don’t care about us.”
Claiming the manager needs to “hold themselves accountable for helping their workers,” the Starbucks employee began to rant over his disdain with the manager of the location who apparently altered the schedule in a manner that saw the manager not coming in that specific weekend.
“We need a union because this can’t happen. This can’t happen!” he pleads. “We need fair scheduling, we need managers to hold themselves accountable for helping their workers.”

He also appears to be struggling with dealing with customers referring to him as a woman, as he complained to the camera. “There’s so many mobile orders and I need to get through all of them and then people are yelling at me because I don’t have their orders ready.” Evan also appears to be struggling with dealing with the existence of online orders.
“And the customer was misgendering me today, like really badly. I didn’t have their order ready. And so, they were just like totally talking to each other and like, ‘She’s clearly incompetent,’ I have a full mustache and beard.”
However, after his video was shared on Twitter by Sebastian Gorka, “a British-born Hungarian-American media personality, military and intelligence analyst, and former government official – serving in the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump as a Deputy Assistant to the President.” In a not-so-surprising turn of events, Evan’s dramatic account of what most people would consider merely a typical weekday drew some criticism from the reaction to her video.
Additional examples of the criticism Evan received came from people who said they wished they were given more work hours at their job, especially while in college, and from others who pointed out that they had managed to balance much more responsibilities while still maintaining a regular work schedule without breaking down in tears when faced with typical work-related situations.
Adding that “Gen X was the last generation to actually grow tf up, and kids these days sure do love to make sure we know it,” a writer from Chicks On The Right said, “Oh my God. Someone call an ambulance, I just sprained my eyeballs from rolling them so hard.”
Following some of the online criticism over her dramatic confessional-style video, Evan followed up with a Twitter post reading, “for the people telling me to grow up or get another job, [I’m] an ivy league pre-law student, [I] could get any job [I] want if [I] cared about that. [I’m] staying at this job solely to ensure that our union efforts are seen through to empower people who are not as privileged as [I] am.”
Evan was contributing to the problem rather than helping it. He left his other three coworkers who showed up for their shift to sink while he cried in the back room instead of helping them. It comes off as a child having a tantrum, simply not a very grown-up way to handle things.
