However, a grandmother who works in Walgreens in Houston as a cashier makes a difference in Rina‘s life in a matter of seconds.
Indeed, pure kindness still exists during these difficult times. The inspiring story of Rita Burns at a Walgreens in Houston has recently earned online attention after she offered her last $20 left in her bank account to pay for a customer’s purchase, which came out to $12.41.
Once Rina found out how much Rita had risked for her, she was determined to repay the kindness! She returned to Walgreens later that same day to pay Rita for the purchase and gave her a little extra to show her gratitude. Then Rina went on her neighborhood’s Nextdoor page and shared the sweet story.
As it turns out, Rita is well-known in the community because she’s always full of cheer and joy! People began commenting left and right to shower her with praise and even set up a GoFundMe “to make sure Ms. Rita has more than $20 in her account.”

Rita has worked at Walgreens since 2016, but this is not the first act of kindness she was able to do while working there. She told KHOU that she regularly helps elderly customers by carrying their bags to the car.
“The true reward is seeing somebody else smile and they’re happy, and it puts a smile on your face. And you know, if I can make someone feel better with $20, then why not? It was worth it.
Ms. Rita’s selfless act is a reminder that there are still good people in the world. Despite the negative headlines we see on a daily basis, there are many individuals who are willing to help others without expecting anything in return. This cashier’s story is one for the ages, and it’s sure to warm your heart.
A fundraiser was started for Ms. Rita, and more than $20,000 was raised for the dedicated Walgreens employee.
